*SPOILERS FOR YELLOWJACKETS S2 E2 & E3 BELOW*
I am so excited for these new characters, especially Elijah Woods’ Walter. I adore Elijah and I am so happy to see him reunited with Melanie Lynskey. And I have to admit my jaw dropped when we find out that the man Callie flirts with at the bar is actually a detective working on the case of Adam’s disappearance. I just figured he was kind of a creepy guy and was not expecting that! Kevyn points out they are not yet doing undercover work on this case so who knows what to expect from this detective!
Walter’s introduction in to the life of adult Misty parallels the introduction of Crystal as a friend to teen Misty. Teen Misty seems to be excited and grateful Crystal wants to be friends. Adult Misty is constantly suspicious of everyone and seems hesitant with real-life Walter. At the end of E3 we see her struggle with her hesitancy to trust Walter and her desire to make a real life connection and perhaps this is founded as he likened her to a Sherlock to his Moriarty. What do Misty’s high walls as an adult say about what happens with Crystal? We have not seen her yet as an adult so we can’t be sure whether or not she made it back home, but either way I foresee betrayal here. Whether it comes from Misty or Crystal is yet to be seen.
In episode 3 we really start to see the beginning of the long-alluded to split amongst the girls in to different factions. The results of this split have had long lasting effects on the survivors, hinted at by adult Natalie’s quip to adult Lottie when they were speaking of bees. I am very eager to see how Van proceeds, and also very excited to see her character as an adult. Perhaps the timing of her return is just what Taissa needs to get the help she needs.
On that note, can I just take a moment to say that I am sick of Sammy getting the really rough short end of the stick pretty much every episode. Give that kid a break already!
A highlight of episode 3 for me was the skilful shifts from the forest to the present day. I am in awe of that style of story building. A parallel of great shifts from past to present I can think of would be Sharp Objects, but one could argue Sharp Objects is based on a well written book that already laid that all out. Yellowjackets does not have that type of source material to work from.
Lastly, I am not sure how much creedence to put in to the symbol yet. It was placed on the baby blanket Lottie gifts to Shauna at the baby shower, then a drop of Shauna’s blood falls in to the area of the womb of the symbol and she gasps and drops the blanket when she sees. Adult Taissa rushes to remove the symbol from Simone’s hand in the hospital after their car crash. It is suggested it is a symbol of protection, but then why does Taissa obviously fear it on someone she loves? Did “Taissa” put it there herself while in a somnambulist state? She was drawn directly to it on at least one sleepwalking episode. Will it ever be explained, or will this be a Lost situation where we are just kept guessing the whole time!?
